Prototype Deployment

DEPLOYMENT SEQUENCE

The ISS space station provides a convenient platform to test and observe prototype Pico Solar Sails. The ≈1m diameter prototype Pico Sail, installed inside the Clamshell Transport Case, can be hand-carried and will fit through ISS hatches.

Once at the space station, Clamshell can be installed inside the Bishop Airlock. The Bishop Airlock is designed to launch payloads into space from the ISS, using the Canadarm2. The JAXA GITAI S1 Robotic Arm inside the Bishop Airlock can extend and open the Clamshell, releasing prototype Pico Sails to float near the space station.
